Moving checklist

Two months before you move:

1.Make a list of your main possessions.
2.Decide what you are taking to your new home, and where to put the large items.
3.Check whether your home insurance will cover your move. If not, speak with your Removal or Insurance Company about it.
4.Research local schools/nurseries and arrange to transfer your children's school records.
5.Check the local area's websites to familiarise yourself with local government, community, social activities.

One month before your house move:

1.Try to finalise your move date so that you can start making bookings for relocation companies.
2.Check the removal companies and find out what kind of services they offer (insurance, storage, clearance, experiance, pricing).
3.Arrange for new house to be cleaned (inside cupboards, walls, carpets etc.) in between the occupiers moving out and you moving in.
4.If necessary book carpet fitters to replace any carpets beyond repair.
5.Book hotel accommodation if necessary.
6.Arrange and book childcare and pet care on moving day.
7.Notify about change of address:
Relatives and friends.
Banks.
Credit and store cards issuers.
Doctors/dentist. Register with a new doctor/dentist, and request any records to be sent to your new doctor.
Transfer your pet's records to a new vet.
Inland Revenue / DSS / your union.
Religious organisations.
Many utilities require at least two working days' notice. Be sure to arrange reconnection at your new home.
Magazine subscriptions.
Mobile phone provider.
Nurseries/Schools/Universities.
Insurance providers - Home, Life, Car insurance. Pension Schemes.
Gas, water, electricity. Check for refunds due to you.
Solicitors.
TV licence.
Vehicle registration. Complete the appropriate changes section on your registration document and return it to DVLA, Swansea.
Driving Licence.
Find out which branch of the bank is nearest your new address.
Find out if required new school dress codes and order uniform(s).

Two weeks before you move:

1.Check you have adequate prescription medicines to cover the moving period.
2.Dispose all flammables such as Paints, Gas Bottles, Cleaning Fluids and Oils.
3.If your relocation company is not making arrangements, book people to carry out services such as removing light fittings, dismantling of furtniture, HiFi, Computer, Printers, TV / satellite equipment. If doing it yourself, don't forget to insert transit screws/fittings where necessary.
4.Cancel local deliveries and services like newspapers, gardener, cleaner, milk delivery, fuel or oil.

One week before you move:

1.Store your documents in a safe place.
2.Don't box important documents such as passports, driving licences, jewellery and money: keep them with you during the move. Store all removal-related documents together.
3.Complete packing.
4.Labelled all boxes properly (the room they're going in to in your new house).
5.Give away plants not being moved.
6.Make arrangements to pay for your removal service.
7.Clean outdoor furniture, equipment and toys, drain any fuel from your lawn-mower and other garden equipment, ensure that water is drained from hoses.
9.Wash and dry linen and clothing.
10.Check your medicine cabinet and dispose of unwanted drugs.
11.If your clothing is to be transported on hangers in a wardrobe box, ensure all clothing is securely fastened on the hanger.

The days before your move:

1.Walk through your home once again to make sure everything is accounted for.
2.Strip the beds.
3.Keep linens in a box that travels with you, so you can use them the first night.
4.Arranged to collect the keys for the new property.
5. Prepare your washing machine - disconnect water and power, fit in the transit bolts.

On the moving day:

1.Record utility meter readings - water, gas, electricity.
2.Stay at the property until your movers have finished.
3.Take one final look around the house to see if you left anything.
4.Before leaving check all windows are secure. Water, gas and electricity supplies should be switched off. Keys and any documents relating to the property or equipment remaining at the house, should be left at a nominated point.
5.Give movers the directions to your new home, and a mobile number where you can be reached during the move.

In your new home:

1.Be present when the removal crew arrives so you can guide them around the house confirming what is to be moved where and any special instructions.
2.Check the unloading of your items and account for each on your packing list. Check carefully for any damaged or missing items.
3.Record utility meter readings - water, gas, electricity.
3.Place important documents in a safe place.
